Outsiders: The Mixtape

La Pelanga at Radio Ambulante: Live at YBCA

On Nov 2, we had the honor of DJing Radio Ambulante’s live show “Outsiders” at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. If you aren’t listening to their podcast yet, we can’t recommend it highly enough. They just won the 2014 Premio Gabriel García Márquez de Periodismo too! You can tune in at http://radioambulante.org.

Sometimes you can’t help but brag about your friends. Radio Ambulante was founded by novelist (and Pelanga cofounder!) Daniel Alarcón, Carolina Guerrero, and a super talented team of Latin American journalists and radio producers. They use radio, the most widely trusted and most popular media within the Latino community, to tell captivating, human stories from across Latin America.

The “Outsiders” live show featured stories about people who skirt around the edges, taking the audience to meet Cuban metalheads in the dark corners of La Habana; to recall the grim early days of the AIDS epidemic in the Castro; to hear the story of an accidental witness to a Mexico City wedding; and even to hear about our 17-year old neighbor’s first kiss.

We had a blast watching the stories grow into their final form, and choosing a soundtrack for the event. It was also incredibly humbling to see first hand how much work, talent, and love goes into the production of Radio Ambulante.

The selections will make much more sense to you if you were at the event; but in any case, we hope you’ll enjoy them!
