Our favorite brown knights, Chicano Batman are coming back to the Bay on Friday, May 15 in San Francisco at The Brick and Motor and then the following night, May 16 in Oakland at Leo’s Music Club.  La Pelanga will be teaming up with them for both shows along with Thee Commons for two nights of connecting past with present and soul to somos. In other words—you best be ready to rock out and dance.

Be warned, every show they have had in the Bay has sold out. There’s nothing we’ve hated more than having to turn beautiful gente away. Get your tickets now while they are still available!

Friday, May 15 at Brick & Mortar, 1710 Mission St, San Francisco – 9PM

Saturday, May 16 at Leo’s Music Club, 5447 Telegraph Ave, Oakland – 9PM

CHICANO BATMAN are back—Nov 16!

CBandLPatNP_7.16
Last February, La Pelanga teamed up with Chicano Batman for their Bay Area album release party of Cycles of Existential Rhyme. The show quickly sold out and it killed us to have to turn so many people away at the doors. But as promised, they’re back and this time at a larger venue—The New Parish in Oakland, CA! Just to make the night even more special, we got straight out of Richmond, V.A. by way of Peru and Mexico, rapper CHHOTI MAA.  Of course La Pelanga will be providing our unique blend of música Latina, Caribeña, y Africana for you to get your dance on before and after. The whole evening is being sponsored by Social Justice Collaborative, a non-profit on the legal front lines of fighting deportation of undocumented youth and their families. Proceeds from this night will go directly towards providing attorneys to youth.

Join us Sunday, November 16 for a night of amazing music and solidarity. Note the working people friendly time from 6 PM to 10 PM. Guarantee yourself tickets AND save money by buying early bird tickets for just $15! ($20 at the door)

In our previous podcast we loved having Daniel French of Las Cafeteras in La Sala so much that we brought him back. We also welcomed the super talented Bardo Martinez, lead singer, guitarist and organist from Chicano Batman into La Sala. Hosts May-Li (dj china tu madre) and Federico (dj papicultor), who have just returned from the Festival Petronio Álvarez in Cali, Colombia, give us a first hand guide through one of the most musically rich areas of the world. A special night full of beautiful stories, impromptu singing, savory arrechón, and irresistible records.

You can also listen, download and subscribe to our podcast in iTunes. Please let us know what you think and leave us a review.

Chicano Batman – Joven Navegante

chicanobatIt’s crackin’ this summer for many of our compañeros here at La Pelanga! Just a week after futboling, singing, dancing, and breaking bread with Las Cafeteras on their recent trip to the bay for all the Copa Communidad festivities, the good homie Bardo rolled by the house to update me on the latest Chicano Batman project – Joven Navegante.

After a hiatus filled with their individual travels and musical wonderings, these four Chicano soul brothers will be reuniting in their hometown of Los Angeles later this month to promote the recent release of their new four track EP Joven Navegante through a series of live shows and the filming of a music video for the EP’s title track.

While at times their new recordings are reminiscent of their first full length self titled LP, as a whole Joven Navegante offers an even more exploratory effort, layering drunken wah wah guitar with psychedelic organ vamps, bouncing reggae bass licks, exceptional drumming throughout, and of course Bardo’s inspired vocals. Some true ear candy for the auditory freak and a perfect fit for any car trip to the sun! Check the EP’s title track below.

Chicano Batman – Joven Navegante (2012)

To satiate the vinyl cravings of folks like myself Chicano Batman has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for a proper 10″ vinyl pressing. Take a moment to watch their Kickstarter video and hear about what they’ve been up to. Real talk – they have some of best gifts I’ve seen on Kickstarter. To my folks in Southern California – pledge $250 and have Chicano Batman come thru for a pop-up beach party con music and fresh fruit!
