Podcast: Migration Mix with Sita Bhaumik

estamos_contra_el_muro

We’re finally back en La Sala after a year of doing multiple DJ residencies. Party events are fun, but hard work as well, and unfortunately it meant pushing pause on the podcast recordings. Now that we’ve wrapped those up we’ve plugged our mics back in and are ready to share more rare records from around the world with specials guests coming through the door. In this episode we are joined by artist Sita Bhaumik. She’s en La Sala with us to talk about her new exhibition Estamos contra el muro | We Are Against the Wall and to preview the exclusive Migration Mixtape we are producing for the show.

Podcast: Brazil and beyond with T-Kay

This month we welcome professional archivist and deejay T-Kay, host of Hip-Hop Hurray out of Austin, Texas and The Afternoon Love-In from DubLab. T-Kay has traveled the world collecting records and visits La Sala with a collection of 45s she picked up from one of her favorite cities Sao Paulo, Brasil. As always, music knows no borders and it doesn’t take long before we’re off to Indonesia, Singapore, Angola and Sierra Leon. Join us for another one-of-a-kind musical journey en La Sala.

Podcast: Kiskeya & Quisqueya

This month we visit the island referred to as Kiskeya or Quisqueya depending which side of the shared border of Haïti or La República Dominicana you live on. To lead us through a vinyl exploration of this beautiful shared musical history we are joined by former Music Director at KALX of UC Berkeley and current Latin Music Curator and Programmer at Pandora, Marcos Juarez.

Podcast: Cleaning up in México

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Digging for records can get dirty, very dirty. So we get to cleaning some of our grimiest records, many of which we found in México and Colombia. DJs China Tu Madre, Papicultor, Smokestack, and Pozole all in La Sala sharing some filthy good music.

Podcast: The Accordion Episode with Marié Abe

The accordion, one of the most fascinating, unique and without question culturally important musical instruments that all of us pelangueros can’t get enough of. Yet to be honest, we actually know very little about these squeezable typewriter-looking devices. That is why we knew we had to dedicate an entire episode to the accordion and why we were so excited to welcome Professor of Ethnomusicology at Boston University, Co-Producer of Public Radio International’s Squeeze Box Stories and bad-ass acordeonista of the group Debo BandMarié Abe. Listen as we learn about the accordion’s origins and its travels through Europe, Africa, the Americas and all the way to Japan.

Podcast: Diggin at the record swap

For this podcast we decided to try something we have never done before — set out to do a show without any records from our collection. Instead we went to a local record swap meet with a set budget of $50 each to create our playlist for the day.

After a full afternoon of digging through many boxes of records from all over the world we headed straight back to La Sala to see if we spent our money wisely. We think we did pretty well, but have a listen and let us know what you think.

Podcast: Colombia!

Processed with VSCOcam with se3 preset

In our previous podcast we loved having Daniel French of Las Cafeteras in La Sala so much that we brought him back. We also welcomed the super talented Bardo Martinez, lead singer, guitarist and organist from Chicano Batman into La Sala. Hosts May-Li (dj china tu madre) and Federico (dj papicultor), who have just returned from the Festival Petronio Álvarez in Cali, Colombia, give us a first hand guide through one of the most musically rich areas of the world. A special night full of beautiful stories, impromptu singing, savory arrechón, and irresistible records.
