If you have been to our latest party series La Pelanga en La Misión at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall then you already know we’re bringing some serious musical heat—combining the best new bands with our unique vinyl mixture of the West African, Caribbean and Latin music. This month on Saturday, October 3 we’re hosting Quitapenas. If you haven’t checked this band out yet, this is your chance to get introduced to their blazing hot afro-caribbean mezcla…
AND it’s their vinyl release party of their brand new 7″ single Mas Tropical/Que Te Pasa
AND we will be celebrating Pelanga’s libra birthday DJs, China Tu Madre and Pozole!
All this combined means the minute you walk through the door you’ll be in the middle of the hottest community dance party in the Bay. Don’t miss out!
Don’t forget, get your tickets early and put those dollars saved towards your first drink.
This month we welcome professional archivist and deejay T-Kay, host of Hip-Hop Hurray out of Austin, Texas and The Afternoon Love-In from DubLab. T-Kay has traveled the world collecting records and visits La Sala with a collection of 45s she picked up from one of her favorite cities Sao Paulo, Brasil. As always, music knows no borders and it doesn’t take long before we’re off to Indonesia, Singapore, Angola and Sierra Leon. Join us for another one-of-a-kind musical journey en La Sala.
This month we visit the island referred to as Kiskeya or Quisqueya depending which side of the shared border of Haïti or La República Dominicana you live on. To lead us through a vinyl exploration of this beautiful shared musical history we are joined by former Music Director at KALX of UC Berkeley and current Latin Music Curator and Programmer at Pandora, Marcos Juarez.
Important Note: This podcast was recorded before the recent disturbing deportation of Haitians taking place in the D.R.
Our favorite brown knights, Chicano Batman are coming back to the Bay on Friday, May 15 in San Francisco at The Brick and Motor and then the following night, May 16 in Oakland at Leo’s Music Club. La Pelanga will be teaming up with them for both shows along with Thee Commons for two nights of connecting past with present and soul to somos. In other words—you best be ready to rock out and dance.
Be warned, every show they have had in the Bay has sold out. There’s nothing we’ve hated more than having to turn beautiful gente away. Get your tickets now while they are still available!
Digging for records can get dirty, very dirty. So we get to cleaning some of our grimiest records, many of which we found in México and Colombia. DJs China Tu Madre, Papicultor, Smokestack, and Pozole all in La Sala sharing some filthy good music.
