We’re at it again — your pelangueros are cooking up another batch of our one-of-a-kind musical stew. As many of you know, we come with some of the most flavorful rhythms from all corners of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. We bring to boil the best Cumbia, Salsa Dura, Soukous, Rumba, Merengue, Coupé Décalé, Reggaeton, Afro Beat and more that promises to have you in a serious sweat on the dancefloor.

Here is an antojito mix of some of what we have cooking up for you.

All proceeds go to SCHOLAR MATCH and LA PEÑA.

SCHOLAR MATCH makes college possible for Bay Area students with financial need, by connecting them with private donors.
LA PEÑA CULTURAL CENTER is a not-for-profit, community-based performing arts and activist center.

Los Chuchos – Cumbia Tokeson

34927875-ChuchosEPVol1CoverArt

Those of you who are fans of cumbia and live in or around Oaklandia are probably already up on Cumbia Tokeson. Over the past year when groups like Bomba Estereo, Celso Piña, and Cafe Tacvba’s Ruben Albarrans have come to town it’s been Cumbia Tokeson who have been heating up the stage with them. The first time you saw them you probably thought, “Wait, I know these dudes”. That’s because they consist of members of tex-punk-cumbia heroes Fuga and Oakland’s La Colectiva. With  Tokeson you’ll hear hints of those former groups, but with a fresh take—mixing up Peruvian Chicha, Colombian Cumbia and Mexican Sonidera.

Of course La Pelanga loves digging for 30+ year old records, but make no mistake discovering new music is just as exciting. Here are a couple of blazing tracks off their debut EP, Los Chuchos Vol.1 For info on their upcoming shows and future releases checkout their FB page.

Enjoy!

Ray Barretto – Margie

I’m sure a lot of collectors can sympathize: I have a big pile of *great* records that I still haven’t had the time to listen to, not even once. Yeah, yeah, something about wanting to *really* listen to them… If you understand, you understand.

Anygüey, I tell you this because last night I had this really vivid dream where I *finally* played this incredible record that has been in that pile for more than six months. I figure that’s a sign, no?

This Wednesday, November 2 in Oakland California there will be the first mass general strike in the Occupy Wall Street movement. Thousands are expected to be converging on Oscar Grant/Frank Ogawa Plaza to protest the current system that has allowed the massive disparity in wealth across the world. Su pelangueros plan to be there to protest and contribute. We’ll be playing our favorite take-to-the streets, power-to-the-people, el-pueblo-unido inspired records LIVE, just blocks away from the heart of the protests at All Day Play (Youth Radio studios).

Our good friend DJ Smokestack will be hosting us on his weekly live podcast radio show Accepted Eclectic at 6 PM, (time has been moved up to 5 or 5:30PM) PST. Hopefully many of you will be able to participate directly, but for those who can’t—be sure to tune in online as we join the sounds of La Pelanga with the chorus of the 99%.

Here is a little taste…
